Google Ads campaign structure

Learn how a Google Ads account is organised into campaigns, ad groups, keywords, and ads, and how to build a tidy search campaign.

What you will learn

  • Describe the levels of a Google Ads account and what each controls
  • Choose the right campaign type for a business goal
  • Plan tightly themed ad groups for a search campaign

Google Ads is a pay-per-click platform: on search campaigns you usually pay when someone clicks your ad. An account has three main levels. The campaign sets the budget, bidding strategy, locations, languages, and schedule. Inside it, ad groups hold a set of closely related keywords and the ads that show for them. Each ad links to a landing page where the visitor can take action.

Choose the campaign type that matches the goal. Search campaigns show text ads to people actively searching, so they suit businesses with clear demand, such as an AC repair service in summer. Performance Max uses Google's automation to run ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Maps, and Discover from one campaign. Display and Video campaigns suit awareness. Most beginners should learn Search first because it is the easiest to control and understand.

Structure search campaigns by theme. A dental clinic might run one campaign for Islamabad with ad groups for teeth whitening, braces, root canal treatment, and emergency dentist. Each ad group holds keywords about that one service and ads that mention it, pointing to the matching page. This keeps ads relevant, which helps Quality Score and makes the results easy to read later.

Practice task

Sketch a search campaign for a local service business with one campaign, four ad groups, five keywords per ad group, and the landing page each group should use.
