Local SEO is how a business appears when people nearby search for what it offers, such as "dentist in F-7" or "AC repair Lahore", including the map results that sit above most of those searches. For businesses in Pakistan, the core of it is a complete, verified Google Business Profile, consistent contact details across the web, a steady flow of genuine reviews, and a website with real pages for the areas you serve.
Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change how far a searcher is from you, but you can influence the other two. This checklist covers what to do, in the order that usually makes sense.
1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
- Search for your business on Google or Google Maps to check whether a profile already exists. If it does, request ownership rather than creating a duplicate.
- If there is no profile, add your business through Google Business Profile using a Google account the business owns, not a personal account belonging to staff or an agency.
- Enter the exact business name you use on your signage and documents. Adding keywords or city names to the name breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
- Choose whether customers visit you at an address or you visit them. Service-area businesses, such as plumbers or home tutors, should hide their address and list the areas they serve instead.
- Complete verification. Google decides which methods to offer, which can include a short video showing your signage, premises and equipment, a phone or email code, or occasionally a postcard. Video verification is now common, so make sure your signage is visible and permanent before you start.
Edits can stay under review for a few days, and major changes to your name, address or category may trigger verification again. Make big changes carefully and one at a time.
2. Choose the right categories
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals for which searches you appear in. Pick the most specific category that describes your main business, for example Pediatrician rather than Doctor.
Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely offer. Look at the top-ranking competitors in your area to see what they use, but do not copy categories that do not apply to you.
3. Fill in services, hours and description
- Services: list each service separately with a short, plain description. Use the words your customers use, including common Roman Urdu terms if that is how people search for you.
- Hours: keep them accurate and add special hours for Eid, public holidays and changed Ramadan timings. Wrong hours lead to bad reviews quickly.
- Description: up to 750 characters on what you do, who you serve and where. Write it for people, not for keywords.
- Contact: a phone number that is answered during business hours, plus your website link.
- Attributes: options such as wheelchair access or women-owned, where they genuinely apply.
4. Add real photos and post regularly
Photos help people decide whether to visit and show that the business is active. Upload your own pictures rather than stock images:
- The outside of your premises, so people recognise it when they arrive
- The interior, reception or shop floor
- Your team at work, with their permission
- Products, completed projects or before-and-after work
- A logo and a cover photo
Business Profile posts let you share updates, offers and events. They do not replace a website, but posting every week or two keeps the profile current and gives searchers another reason to choose you. Mention seasonal offers, new services or changes to your opening hours.
5. Get reviews and reply to every one
Reviews affect both how you rank and whether someone calls you. The aim is a steady flow of genuine reviews, not a sudden burst.
- Get your review link from the profile, using the option to ask for reviews, and share it on WhatsApp after a job is done, on receipts, or as a QR code at your counter.
- Ask every customer, not only the happy ones. Choosing who to ask based on whether they will be positive, or offering discounts in exchange for reviews, breaks Google's policies.
- Never buy reviews or post them from staff or family accounts. Google removes fake reviews and can restrict the profile.
- Reply to every review within a few days. Thank positive reviewers briefly and specifically.
- For negative reviews, stay calm, acknowledge the issue, and offer to sort it out directly by phone or email. Future customers often pay more attention to your reply than to the complaint.
Reviews written in Urdu or Roman Urdu are perfectly fine. Where you can, reply in the language the customer used.
6. Keep your name, address and phone consistent (NAP)
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Search engines compare your details across the web, and mismatches create doubt about which version is correct. Pakistani addresses are especially prone to variation, with sector names, plaza names, markaz and floor numbers written differently from one listing to the next.
- Decide on one exact format, for example: Office 5, 2nd Floor, Example Plaza, G-11 Markaz, Islamabad. Use it everywhere, word for word.
- Pick one main phone number and one way of writing it, either with +92 or with a leading 0, and stick with it.
- Update your website footer, contact page, Facebook page, Instagram bio, LinkedIn page and WhatsApp Business profile to match.
- List the business in reputable directories relevant to your industry and city, and with any chamber of commerce or trade body you belong to. Quality matters more than the number of listings.
- Search for your old phone numbers and previous addresses to find outdated listings, then correct or remove them.
7. Set up Bing Places and Apple Business Connect
Google dominates search in Pakistan, but it is not the only map people use. Bing Places for Business feeds Bing and other Microsoft products, and it can import your details directly from your Google Business Profile in a few minutes. Apple Business Connect lets you claim and edit your place card on Apple Maps, which iPhone users see when they search in Maps or ask Siri. Feature availability varies by country, so check what is offered when you sign up. Use exactly the same NAP details on both.
8. Build location pages with real local content
If you serve several cities or areas, create a page for each one you genuinely serve. A page that only swaps the city name into otherwise identical text is a doorway page, and Google's spam policies treat those as manipulation. A useful location page includes:
- The address, phone number and hours for that branch, matching its Business Profile
- An embedded map and directions from well-known local landmarks
- The services offered at that location, and any that differ from other branches
- Photos of that branch and the people who work there
- Examples of work done in the area, or answers to questions local customers actually ask
- Parking, access or nearby transport information
If you have a single location, your home page and contact page do this job. Do not create pages for areas you do not actually serve.
9. Add LocalBusiness structured data
Structured data gives search engines your business details in a format they can read reliably. Add LocalBusiness schema in JSON-LD to your home page or to each location page, using the most specific type available, such as Dentist, LegalService or AutoRepair. Include:
- name, exactly as it appears on your Business Profile
- address, as a PostalAddress with street, locality, region and country
- telephone and url
- openingHoursSpecification for your hours
- geo coordinates for the location
- sameAs links to your official social media profiles
Test the markup with Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator. The structured data must match what is visible on the page. It helps search engines understand your business, but it does not guarantee any special display in the results.
10. Track calls, direction requests and enquiries
Your Business Profile has a Performance section showing how many people called you from the profile, asked for directions or clicked through to your website, and which searches found you. Check it monthly and note any changes after you add photos, posts or reviews.
- Compare calls and direction requests month on month rather than day to day, as daily numbers swing a lot.
- Use the UTM-tagged website link to see profile visits and enquiries in GA4.
- Ask new customers how they found you and record the answer. Many local customers call or walk in without ever visiting your website.
- If you have several branches, track each profile separately.
Local SEO is mostly steady upkeep rather than a one-off project. Get the profile complete and verified, keep your details consistent, make asking for reviews part of your normal routine, and build pages that show you know the areas you serve. A small business that keeps doing these basics well can hold its own against larger competitors who set up a profile once and forgot about it.
