What you will learn
- Explain the difference between paid, owned, and earned media
- Identify which channels a local business already uses
- Describe how one customer might move between several channels before buying
Digital marketing is any effort to reach and persuade customers through online channels. It helps to sort those channels into three groups. Paid media is attention you buy, such as Google Ads or Meta Ads. Owned media is what you control, such as your website, email list, and WhatsApp Business catalogue. Earned media is attention others give you: reviews, shares, press mentions, and organic search rankings.
The groups behave differently. Paid media is fast and easy to scale, but it stops the day the budget stops. Owned media builds slowly but costs little to keep running, and the audience belongs to you rather than to a platform. Earned media is the most trusted by customers, yet you can only encourage it, not order it. Most healthy businesses use all three.
Real customers rarely follow a straight line. Someone in Rawalpindi might see a bakery's Instagram ad, ignore it, search for "birthday cakes near me" a week later, read the Google reviews, then order through WhatsApp. Each channel played a part. Your job as a marketer is to understand that path and make sure every step is easy, consistent, and measurable.
