What you will learn
- Verify a site and submit an XML sitemap in Search Console
- Read clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position in the Performance report
- Use the indexing and URL Inspection tools to find and fix problems
Google Search Console is a free tool that shows how a site performs in Google Search. GA4 reports what visitors do on the site, while Search Console reports what happens before the click: which searches showed your pages, how often, and how often people clicked. Verify the site, ideally as a domain property using a DNS record, and submit your XML sitemap.
The Performance report shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and average position for queries and pages. Look for opportunities. A page with many impressions but a low CTR may need a better title tag and meta description. Queries ranking around positions 8 to 20 are often worth improving with better content or internal links. Compare date ranges to spot pages that are losing traffic.
The Pages report under Indexing lists which URLs are indexed and why others are not, such as "Crawled - currently not indexed" or an excluded noindex tag. URL Inspection checks one page in detail and lets you request indexing after a fix. The Core Web Vitals report groups slow or unstable pages. Check Search Console at least monthly, and always after a website redesign or migration.
