Indexing

Indexing is when a search engine stores a crawled page in its database so it can appear in results. Not every crawled page gets indexed.

What Indexing means

After crawling, Google renders the page, works out what it is about, and decides whether it is worth keeping. Thin, duplicate, or blocked pages may be left out.

Google Search Console's page indexing report shows which pages are indexed and why others are not.

Example

Search Console marks 40 tag pages as "Crawled, currently not indexed" because they repeat content found elsewhere on the site.

Why it matters

Only indexed pages can bring search traffic, and a high share of unindexed pages often signals quality problems.
