Duplicate content

Duplicate content is the same or very similar text available at more than one URL, which splits ranking signals and can leave the wrong page ranking.

What Duplicate content means

It is usually accidental: URL parameters, printer versions, HTTP and HTTPS versions, or product descriptions copied from a supplier.

Google does not penalise ordinary duplication, but it chooses one version to show, which may not be the one you want.

Example

Fifty city pages that differ only by the city name are treated as near-duplicates, and most of them are never indexed.

Why it matters

Pages that add nothing unique rarely rank, and producing them at scale can break Google's spam policies.
