CTRClick-through rate

CTR is the percentage of people who click an ad, email, or search result after seeing it: clicks divided by impressions, times 100.

What CTR means

Click-through rate tells you how compelling a message is to the people who see it. It applies to ads, organic search listings, email links, and buttons alike.

A good CTR depends on the channel. Search ads often reach several percent because the searcher is already looking, while display banners usually sit well under one percent.

Example

A Google ad is shown 4,000 times and clicked 160 times, giving a CTR of 4%.

Why it matters

On Google Ads, a higher CTR feeds into Quality Score and can lower what you pay per click. In organic search, a better title and description can lift CTR without improving your ranking.
