Nofollow link

A nofollow link carries rel="nofollow", telling search engines not to treat it as an endorsement. Google treats it as a hint, not a rule.

What Nofollow link means

Since 2019 there are also rel="sponsored" for paid or affiliate links and rel="ugc" for user-generated content such as comments.

Paid links must be marked sponsored or nofollow. Leaving them as normal links breaks Google's spam policies.

Example

A sponsored article about a brand marks its links rel="sponsored", so it stays within the rules while still sending readers to the brand.

Why it matters

Using the right link attributes keeps a site safe from link-scheme penalties.
