301 redirect

A 301 redirect permanently sends visitors and search engines from an old URL to a new one, passing most of the old page's ranking signals.

What 301 redirect means

Use a 301 when a page has moved for good: a new URL structure, a merged page, or a move to a new domain. A 302 means the move is temporary.

Each old URL should point straight to its closest new equivalent. Sending everything to the home page loses relevance and frustrates visitors.

Example

When a site renames /services/seo to /services/seo-optimization, a 301 keeps existing links and rankings working.

Why it matters

Site migrations without proper redirects are one of the most common causes of sudden traffic drops.
