Search intent

Search intent is the goal behind a search: to learn something, find a specific site, compare options, or buy. Pages rank best when they match it.

What Search intent means

Intent is usually grouped as informational, navigational, commercial, and transactional. Google studies what satisfies searchers, so the results page itself shows which intent it has settled on.

If the top results for a phrase are all guides, a sales page will struggle to rank there, however well optimised it is.

Example

"What is SEO" calls for an explanation. "SEO agency Islamabad" calls for a service page with proof and a contact option.

Why it matters

Matching intent is often the difference between ranking and not ranking, and between visitors who leave and visitors who enquire.
