Noindex tag

A noindex tag tells search engines not to show a page in results. It is set with a robots meta tag or an X-Robots-Tag HTTP header.

What Noindex tag means

It suits pages that should exist but not be found through search, such as thank-you pages, internal search results, and staging sites.

Search engines must be able to crawl a page to see its noindex, so do not also block it in robots.txt.

Example

A form's thank-you page is set to noindex so people cannot land on it from Google without filling in the form.

Why it matters

Noindex keeps low-value pages out of search, and a noindex left on by mistake can remove an entire site from Google.
