llms.txt is a proposed standard: a markdown file at a site's root that summarises the site and links its key pages for AI tools to read.
Proposed in 2024, it gives language models a clean overview without parsing navigation and scripts. Some sites also publish an llms-full.txt with complete text.
Support varies between AI tools, and it does not replace normal SEO. It is a low-effort addition that can help assistants describe a site accurately.
Example
This site publishes /llms.txt with its services, courses, and glossary, and /llms-full.txt with the full text of each.
Why it matters
As more research starts with AI assistants, making your content easy for them to read is a cheap way to be described correctly.
