Web Development Course · Module 7, lesson 5

Publishing your site and presenting it in your portfolio

Launch your finished site on its own domain, set it up in Search Console, document the project on GitHub and present it as a portfolio piece.

What you will learn

  • Publish the final site on a custom domain over HTTPS
  • Set up Search Console and a basic maintenance routine
  • Write a README and a short case study that explain your work

When your checklist passes, merge your final changes into main and let the hosting platform deploy them. Connect your custom domain if you have one, confirm HTTPS works, and check the live site once more on your phone. Add the site to Google Search Console, submit your sitemap and come back after a few days to see whether pages are being indexed.

A live site needs looking after. Plan a simple routine: update dependencies with npm from time to time and test after each update, check Search Console for errors, review the content for anything out of date, and make sure the contact form still delivers messages. Because everything is in Git, you can always roll back a change that causes problems.

Finally, present the project well. Update the GitHub README with a description, the tools used, how to run it locally and a link to the live site. Then write a short case study for your portfolio explaining the goal, your plan, the main decisions and challenges, and what you would improve next. Being able to explain your choices clearly is as valuable as the code.

Practice task

Publish your final site, submit its sitemap in Google Search Console, and write a README plus a short case study of around 300 words explaining what you built and why.
