Lazy loading

Lazy loading delays loading images and other content until they are about to scroll into view, so the first screen loads faster.

What Lazy loading means

Browsers support it natively with loading="lazy" on images and iframes, and frameworks such as Next.js apply it by default.

The main image at the top of the page should not be lazy-loaded, because that would slow down Largest Contentful Paint.

Example

A long case study page with 30 images loads only the first two immediately, and the rest as the reader scrolls.

Why it matters

Lazy loading saves data on mobile and speeds up first load, as long as it is not applied to the hero image.
