Interaction to Next Paint measures how quickly a page visibly responds when someone taps, clicks, or types. Good is 200 milliseconds or less.
INP replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. It looks at interactions across the whole visit, not just the first one.
Poor INP is usually caused by heavy JavaScript keeping the browser busy, so it cannot respond to the visitor straight away.
Example
A filter button on a product page takes half a second to react because a large script is running. Splitting that work up brings the response under 200 ms.
Why it matters
A page that feels sluggish to tap feels broken, especially on mid-range phones, which are what most visitors use.
